Hacktoberfest, Berlin Meetup, new features, and then some
We got another new update for you today. Here’s what happened at Statamic HQ and in the community since our last update in September.
Hacktoberfest π
Is it October already? Yes, and that means the annual Hacktoberfest is on again. Celebrating open source software and the communities involved, Digital Ocean is hosting the ninth edition this year. During October, you can contribute to participating open source projects and get virtual badges or receive the renowned Hacktoberfest t-shirt.
Statamic also participates in the event. The hacktoberfest
tag has been added to both our statamic/cms and statamic/docs repos.
Not sure what to work on? Head to our statamic/ideas or statamic/cms repos and get some inspiration by looking at the open issues. Not that familiar with Statamic yet? You can also help improve our docs. Even if it’s just fixing tpyos.
Head over to hacktoberfest.com and get yourself signed up.
We are thankful for all contributions and appreciate everyone who helps to improve Statamic (or helped in the past) β€οΈ
Houston, we added new features π
Quite a few updates have been released in the past weeks. Besides the general bug fixes and improvementsβ’, we want to highlight two new features today that we think you’ll like.
The first feature, replace assets, is targeted at users of the Control Panel while the second one, post-install hooks, is targeted at creators of Starter Kits.
Replace Assets π―
Did you ever upload an asset just to see you selected the wrong file? We simplified the workflow for this so you can now replace the asset in place. Statamic can even take care of deleting the old file if you want.
Oh, you also see a “Set Alt” button now when an image doesn’t have an alt text yet. How neat is that?
Post-Install Commands for Starter Kits π¨
Are you creating Starter Kits? We got a nifty new feature for you!
You can now use post-install hooks and run commands when a user installs your starter kit via the CLI. Get user input on questions like:
Do you want to enable rad feature xy?
Do you want to support this project by giving it a star on GitHub?
One of the most popular starter kits, Peak, already makes use of this.
Jesse even headed into the land of Windows to bring you this feature. What a brave bearded man. According to him, it was 4/5 of the work. So let’s be thankful and honor his sacrifice.
Want to create your own Starter Kit? Have a look at our docs on it.
But wait, there’s more
We also shipped additional things in the past few weeks, like default preferences (in preparation for the upcoming customization capabilities for the Control Panel’s navigation, the new cookie tag, and other new features and improvements to existing tags and fieldtypes.
Statamic Berlin Meetup π©πͺ
September 8th marked the inaugural Statamic Berlin meetup π
Hosted by prepend in a coworking space in Kreuzberg, we saw three talks:
- A Love Letter to Statamic and its Community by Dennis Kluge from prepend
- Scaling Together with your Clients. From a Personal Blog to an Enterprise Solution by Jonas Siewertsen from DER SPIEGEL
- Using Statamic at Pathly (a Nonprofit Organization) by Oliver Mesieh from nougatbytes.io
The talks were recorded and once they’re online we’ll update this post. You can now watch the recordings on YouTube.
Our very own Joshua also attended the event as our field reporter and did some live coverage on Twitter.
If you want to attend the upcoming events make sure to join the group on meetup.com.
New archive for our newsletter, The Firehose π¦
You probably already knew that we have a monthly newsletter, didn’t you?
Well, you can now access past issues of our newsletter in the archive. The newsletter includes some exclusive content that you won’t find elsewhere. Like a collection of new site launches, community links (like blog posts, videos, tutorials), and more.
Head to the archive, check out some of the older issues, and, while you’re already at it, subscribe to it if you like.
